I think this one is really interesting. The one thing that really bothers me is that there isn't much color to it. It's pretty flat in terms of color. If you had, say, added some red or muted purple to his skin, he would have looked more alive. Even his hair is a bit...dull. If you had added blue, or even a bit of green, it would have looked better. Especially with all the things and colors around him, he would have had a lot of color bouncing off of his skin and hair. For example, the yellow from the rubber duck would have given some yellow into his hair and the red from the phone would have added red to his hair as well. James Gurney, the man who created and drew Dinotopia, can explain things WAY better than me: [link] It has a lot of articles of him talking about colors and how they work.
Thank you for linking that website to me; I have not read through it yet, but I will do so afterwards. When you say there "isn't much color to it" are you suggesting the saturation of the colors isn't very strong or the lack of color in the boy (and background) "killed" it?
I really appreciate critiques. Have you studied classes about colors? People who glance at my artwork (typically traditional work) just look at my skill level and the subject-matter, but never really explain if other things, such as color, are incorrect or could be improved. ( u v u ) My high school art classes never correct me since they are used to students being discouraged by critiques.
